Event Details

Course Description: The essential information and drills pistol shooters new to slide-mounted red dot pistols need to know. A limited number of loaner guns will be available for those that want to try red dot pistols before upgrading or purchase their own.

Note: this class will NOT include discussion of laser sights that project a laser onto the target. It will focus on slide mounted red dot sights like the Trijicon RMR, Deltapoint, Holosun, Swampfox, and similar.

Topics: Pros and cons of red dot sights, equipment configuration, red dot study summary, zeroing, finding the dot from ready and when drawing, 10-25 yard shooting, target transitions and evaluation of student skills using national standard courses of fire.

Length: 6-7 hours.

For prices and upcoming course dates, check the schedule page.

Prerequisites: Ability to pass the 5×5 shooting test using iron sights (5 shots into a 5″ circle, in 5 seconds, from 5 yards, preferably starting with gun holstered and drawing from open carry, or starting from a ready position, finger off trigger.)

That level of shooting skill is higher than what is required to pass the Texas License to Carry shooting test.

A person with weak marksmanship or gun-handling skills may feel somewhat left behind. You may still be able to participate safely, but may not feel that the class is the best use of your time and ammunition.

Students not yet at that skill level are welcome to take any of our lower level courses, such as Basic Pistol 2 or Beyond Basics, using a pistol with a red dot, to prepare for the Red Dot Essentials class.

Faster and more accurate shooting and gun-handling skills beyond the carry permit level (malfunctions, reloads under stress) such as what is taught in Defensive Pistol Skills 1 and Defensive Pistol Skills 2 will be very helpful.

Required Equipment: A handgun with a slide mounted red dot, belt holster, 350 rounds of ammunition, at least 2 magazines, magazine pouches, eye and ear protection.

See the general policies page for suggestions on food, drink, clothing, etc.

Taught by:  Karl Rehn and Sean Hoffman

Facility: A-Zone Range (and other locations)

Additional information: Karl is a Grand Master in USPSA’s Carry Optics division, earned using a slide mounted red dot pistol. Sean Hoffman is a graduate of the Sage Dynamics (Aaron Cowan) and Modern Samurai Project (Scott Jedlinski) red dot pistol instructor programs.
